Northern Beaches 2011 – Volcom QVS at Avalon

If you want something to do this weekend get down to Avalon and check out the Volcom QVS starting from 7am. A safe, entertaining, fun way to spend a Saturday with family and friends. Definitely get to Avalon and check out the talented surfing from youth from around the Northern Beaches, you won’t regret it.

ZAHN Foxton doesn’t know what to expect and he’s loving it.

As chief organiser of the Volcom VQS event at Avalon this Saturday, he just wants to see kids out in the water enjoying the sport he is so passionate about.

‘‘It definitely isn’t like your usual (surfing) contest,’’ Foxton said.

‘‘We want to generate a family atmosphere where fun is the order of the day.

‘‘It is a concept we have run for a few years now and the feedback we get is always positive.’’

And the action will be equally playful on the sand.

Berocca eating contests and detailed sandcastles are sure to attract hordes of youngsters, as will numerous giveaways.

Free entry is another bonus. Foxton added registrations begin at 7am sharp.

‘‘We are working with a first come, first served rule,’’ he said.

‘‘We had about 180 competitors last year and hope to increase those numbers this time round.

‘‘Hopefully we also have a decent swell.’’

Four divisions will be running – the 14 and under groms, 15-17s juniors, girls and pro-am.

Winners from each category will progress to the australian championships in Manly this April, with a trip to compete in America at the world VQS titles a distinct possibility for a select few.

North Narrabeen’s David Vlug is eyeing off that opportunity.

‘‘It would be epic if that happens, but either way it will be a fun day,’’ he said.

‘‘I have entered each comp since about 2006, it is well run with a good vibe.’’

His enthusiasm is matched by Avalon’s Connor Gale.

‘‘I can’t wait, the past few years I have bombed out early, it would be nice to win,’’ he said.

‘‘It won’t be easy, I have to take on guys like Jordan Lawler, I will just do my best and see what happens.’’

Keep safe by completing a Simple Instruction Apply First Aid (formerly called Senior First Aid) or Perform CPR training course being held at the Brookvale Hotel during March and April.
